About Portage
Originally settled in 1864, Portage earned its name from the historic route where Native Americans and early pioneers carried — or 'ported' — their boats and supplies between the Bear River and nearby waterways. Today, Portage maintains its rural charm with productive farmland, spacious residential lots, horse properties, and a close-knit community. Residents enjoy a slower pace of life while remaining within convenient driving distance of Tremonton, Garland, Preston, Idaho, and major transportation corridors including Interstates 15 and 84. Outdoor recreation is plentiful, with nearby access to Crystal Hot Springs, Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Willard Bay State Park, the Wellsville Mountains, Mantua Reservoir, and numerous public lands.
