Get to know Alta

About Alta

Alta sits at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon in the Wasatch Mountains, roughly 30 miles from downtown Salt Lake City and Salt Lake City International Airport. The town has intentionally stayed small and focused on outdoor recreation. Housing stock is a tightly held mix of mountain residences, vacation homes, ski lodges, and luxury properties surrounded by protected National Forest land. Access is via State Route 210 through the canyon — winter travel and avalanche-control closures are part of life here.

Why people move to Alta

People buy in Alta for legendary skiing, deep powder, pristine alpine scenery, and a peaceful mountain atmosphere within an easy drive of the Salt Lake Valley. Buyers include luxury second-home owners, ski-industry professionals, retirees building a mountain retreat, and investors targeting vacation-rental income. Inventory is limited and turnover is low.

Alta homeownership snapshot

Alta's market is dominated by luxury, second-home, and vacation-property transactions, with tightly held inventory and long ownership tenures. Typical 2026 pricing ranges widely — from condominiums and lodge units in the high-$500Ks to multi-million-dollar custom ski residences. Jumbo, second-home, and HECM-eligible primary-residence financing are the common conversations; appreciation is supported by limited supply and durable resort demand.
